Six British Citizens Jailed for One Million Pound Arson Attack on Storage Facility Holding Aid for Ukraine

A group of six individuals from Britain acting for Russia’s Wagner group have been handed jail terms for igniting a located in London storage unit that was storing relief supplies intended for Ukraine.

Court Rulings and Involvement

While delivering the sentences, the presiding judge at the central criminal court remarked that they had planned a “campaign of terrorism and sabotage” to benefit the Russian state.

The individual named Dylan Earl was given a seventeen-year prison sentence with an extra six-year period on supervised release due to his “primary involvement”. Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was given twelve years in jail with one year on extended licence. The offences they admitted resulted in them being the initial persons to be found guilty under the 2023 National Security Act.

Jakeem Rose, also from Croydon, was sentenced to eight years and 10 months. Nii Mensah, 23, from Thornton Heath, south London, was given nine years and Ugnius Asmena, who was without a fixed address, was given seven years. The trio were each found guilty of serious fire-setting and given a further year on extended licence by the court.

Ashton Evans drug dealer hailing from Newport, Gwent, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment plus a further year on extended licence after being found guilty of withholding information about terrorist acts connected to a separate scheme in the Mayfair area.

Details of the Attack

The deliberate fire on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London endangered sixty fire service personnel and resulted in £1m in damage in March last year.

The proceedings revealed that the 21-year-old Earl and Reeves, 24 did not leave their bedrooms while coordinating the incident for the Wagner mercenary organization, acting on behalf of the Russian government.

The group selected the warehouse because it was being used to supply humanitarian aid and StarLink satellite equipment to Ukraine.

When the same Ukrainian company was hit by an intentional fire 10 days later in Madrid, investigators from the Metropolitan Police's anti-terror unit took over the investigation.

Proof and Additional Schemes

When Earl was taken into custody, law enforcement examination of his cellphone revealed he had recordings of the warehouse fire being started and was in communication with the Wagner group on Telegram, via an account with the usernames ‘Privet Bot account’ and ‘Lucky Strike’.

Some of the messages indicated that reconnaissance for additional operations, involving fire-related incidents at a restaurant and wine store in Mayfair belonging to the Russian dissident Evgeny Chichvarkin had already been carried out. The use of explosives to harm structures was also discussed.

Investigators discovered that Earl was also considering the potential abduction of Chichvarkin and “sending him back to Russia to face prison”.

The drug dealer from Elmesthorpe in Leicestershire had discussed an additional planned incident in the Czech Republic.

In a search of his home, law enforcement found a Russian flag, more than £20,000 in cash and cocaine hydrochloride with a market value of approximately thirty-four thousand pounds.

Motivations and Judicial Remarks

The proceedings revealed he was a member of multiple pro-Russian propaganda channels and was motivated by “plain and severe avarice”.

“This case is about the efforts of the Russian Federation to gain pernicious global influence using online platforms to enlist saboteurs vast distances from Moscow.”

She found the fire incident had a “link to terrorism” irrespective of if the individuals responsible were aware of it. The Wagner group is banned by the UK government as a terrorist group.
